With a modest collection of linens and rings, you can mix and match colors and textures to create a surprising number of variations. The key is to buy pieces you love and then be adventurous.
Think of it as the law of taste: If you have pieces you genuinely like to look at, they are very likely to compliment each other even when you least expect it. How many times have you bought a gorgeous sweater or jacket not knowing exactly what you would wear it with only to get home and spot three or four great possibilities already hanging in your closet? (On the table, the same principle applies when adding glassware and decorative pieces.)
To get the hang of mixing it up, pull out a few napkins from every pattern of linen in your closet. Now grab several of each of your napkin rings and go for it. The challenge is to create as many different combinations as you can without using the napkin and ring that you actually bought as a pair. You may come up with some scary combos, but you’re likely to come up with some exciting new ideas too.
Lap Couture Tip 1
To get the most out of double-sided napkins, don’t fold them into a perfect square before sliding on the napkin ring. By keeping the edges uneven, the inside pattern blooms out of the outside print.
Lap Couture Tip 2
Find new combinations to freshen up your table’s look.
Lap Couture Tip 3
Double-sided napkins have extra texture and interest built in.
Lap Couture Tip 4
Special occasions and holidays call for a little extra glam. Choose what you love and your growing collection will endure over the years.
