CREEK

WHAT TO LOVE

main

Writers, nature lovers, and everybody seeking to get away from it all come to Woody Creek, a small village only eight miles northwest of Aspen. Time seems to stand still in this ranching community. There is hardly any noise or movement, save for the mountain breeze rustling through the grass, the gentle bubbling as Roaring Fork River and the eponymous Woody Creek flow, and other sounds of nature. And when you need a change of pace, some excitement coursing through your veins, endless outdoor recreation is right within reach, as are Aspen and Snowmass Village.

The equestrian lifestyle is front and center in Woody Creek, where ranchland goes on for miles and miles under the neverending open sky. In the periphery are the tall peaks of the Rockies and some of the choicest ski runs in the world once the snow starts to fall.

Life is so quiet here and slow-paced; residents trade their cars for mountain bikes and horses. And everybody gathers at Woody Creek Tavern, the village’s only nightlife destination that was once a favorite haunt of legendary journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who once lived in the area. There is no pressure to be anyone, just yourself. The spirit of the American West is well and alive here.

Real estate in Woody Creek is highly coveted, with opportunities rare and few. Homes range from contemporary luxury estates, some by the riverfront, to expansive ranch and horse properties. People love to live here, and hardly anyone wants to leave, resulting in low turnovers. But for those who are dreaming of creating their own mountain estate exactly according to their specifications, acreage is readily available.

NEIGHBORHOOD HANGOUT

Meet colorful characters, trade stories, and sit down for stiff drinks with your neighbors at the Woody Creek Tavern, lovingly referred to as the heart of the community. Housed in a 1940s log cabin once owned by the Lee Jones Family, the local watering hole attracts foodies, writers, intrepid travelers, and long-distance bikers passing by via the Rio Grande Trail. Decorating the walls are thousands of polaroid pictures from guests and patrons who have been visiting since the tavern opened in the 1980s, making Woody Creek Tavern an unexpected museum of local history.

INSPIRING ENVIRONMENT

All four ski mountains of the Aspen area—Snowmass, Buttermilk, Aspen Mountain, and Aspen Highlands—can be seen from almost anywhere in Woody Creek, providing plenty of magnificent alpine views that change with the seasons. These very same vistas have attracted many creative individuals to the village over the years and continue to do so.

PEACEFUL OUTDOOR RECREATION

Woody Creek offers plenty of avenues to unplug and relax. There is excellent fly fishing in the area courtesy of Woody Creek and Roaring Fork River, as well as scenic riverbanks for picture-perfect picnics and afternoon naps. Trails meander throughout the village for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. And at night, the dark sky allows for some of the best stargazing in the Roaring Fork Valley.
